Rail Diagnostics Based on Ultrasonic Guided Waves: An Overview

چکیده

Rail tracks undergo massive stresses that can affect their structural integrity and produce rail breakage. The last phenomenon represents a serious concern for railway management authorities, since it may cause derailments and, consequently, losses of rolling stock material lives. Therefore, the activities track maintenance inspection are paramount importance. In recent years, use various technologies monitoring rails detection defects has been investigated; however, despite important progresses in this field, substantial research efforts still required to achieve higher scanning speeds improve reliability diagnostic procedures. It is expected that, near future, an role will be played by ultrasonic guided wave technology. manuscript, its investigated detail; moreover, both main strategies technical literature taken into consideration. first strategy consists installation instrumentation on board moving test vehicle scans below while running. second strategy, instead, based distributing throughout entire network, so continuous quasi-real-time obtained. our analysis proposed solutions, prototypes employed methods described.

Rail Inspection with Guided Waves

The critical subject of transverse crack detection in a rail head is treated in this paper. Conventional bulk wave ultrasonic techniques often fail because of shelling and other surface imperfections that shield the defects that lie below the shelling. A guided wave inspection technique is introduced here that can send ultrasonic energy along the rail under the shelling with a capability of fin...

An Introduction to Ultrasonic Guided Waves

Introduction Compared to ultrasonic bulk waves that travel in infinite media with no boundary influence, guided waves require a structural boundary for propagation. As an example, some guided wave possibilities are illustrated in Figure 1 for a Rayleigh surface wave, a Lamb wave, and a Stonely wave at an interface between two materials.

Predicting bone strength with ultrasonic guided waves

Recent bone quantitative ultrasound approaches exploit the multimode waveguide response of long bones for assessing properties such as cortical thickness and stiffness. Clinical applications remain, however, challenging, as the impact of soft tissue on guided waves characteristics is not fully understood yet. In particular, it must be clarified whether soft tissue must be incorporated in wavegu...

Chirp Excitation of Ultrasonic Guided Waves (preprint)

Most ultrasonic guided wave methods require tone burst excitations to achieve some degree of mode purity. In addition, it is often desirable to acquire data using multiple frequencies, particularly during method development when the best frequency for a specific application is not known. However, this process is inconvenient and time-consuming, particularly if extensive signal averaging at each...

On the Piezoelectric Detection of Guided Ultrasonic Waves

In order to quantify the wave motion of guided ultrasonic waves, the characteristics of piezoelectric detectors, or ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission sensors, have been evaluated systematically. Such guided waves are widely used in structural health monitoring and nondestructive evaluation, but methods of calibrating piezoelectric detectors have been inadequate. This study relied on ...
